India

I once talked about some of the things that Indians do that make me not so proud of them. Here's an example. I took this picture at the Taj when we visited 2 weeks ago. The sign says in English and Hindi, "Please do not take off your shoes here" and that is exactly what everyone had done.

Where is it that we have a problem in taking orders? In following rules? I wonder. 60 years of independence and some of us behave like we didn't deserve that freedom.

Looking from the footwear it doesn't look like these people were illiterates. They probably thought these instructions were without a base, maybe? I am sure once they are explained why they should not be doing it, like spoiling the beauty, they will not do it. If they continue to do, maybe we should trash all their slippers before they come back. And we should do it in different places that it will come in news and people will be reminded of India thaathaa :)

We dont follow instructions, we are not disciplined, we behave as though notes and instructions are for someone else and not for us. Sad sad...what surprises me quite a bit is the same set of folks who are so well behaved when they are outside india :(

It's similar to cars behind us HONKING non stop while the signal is still red...almost wants me custom make a sticker for our car bumper reading- "No matter how much you honk, we wont move until the signal is GREEN - Hope you are not COLOUR BLIND"

You think that will work??

@Revathi: How does the footwear tell you anything about the person's literacy level? Just curious :-)

I agree... the footwear should be donated to charity before these people return. They will learn for sure.

@Chitra: We're a land with the strictest laws and the most lenient of implementation :-) It is no wonder then, is it?

@Nandita: If people can read your sticker, they'd probably understand that red means stop (my friend's 3 year old niece knows that!!) But for those who are not willing to understand, what can you do?

The change has to come from within every individual.

First time here. What u hv written is so true. When I tried telling someone @ a temple abt the same, their reply was that lot of others have already done it. Ek main kya jaayega? This is our mentality. Do we really follow others for gud things the same way?
